If you haven’t arranged a funeral before, you may be wondering how long the service will take and what to expect on the day. While every funeral is different, most services follow a similar structure.
How Long Is a Funeral Service?
A typical funeral service lasts around 30 to 45 minutes, although this can vary depending on the type of service and the wishes of the family.
A service may include a eulogy or tribute, readings, music, prayers and time for personal reflections. Families can choose what they would like to include, so some services may be shorter or longer.
What Happens Before the Service?
For a cremation, family and friends will usually meet at the funeral home before the funeral begins. From there, they can travel together as part of the funeral procession to the crematorium.
The funeral procession provides an opportunity for everyone to come together and accompany their loved one on the journey to the service. Once at the crematorium, family and friends will be welcomed into the chapel for the funeral service.
For a burial, the arrangements may be slightly different, with the procession travelling to the church, cemetery or other chosen location.
What Happens After the Service?
What happens after the funeral service depends on whether your loved one is being cremated or buried.
At a crematorium, once the service has finished, the curtain may be drawn in front of the coffin as part of the committal. The coffin is then taken through the cremation process in accordance with the crematorium’s procedures.
For a burial, the coffin is usually taken to the graveside following the service. Family and friends may accompany the coffin and, if they wish, have the opportunity to say a final goodbye at the graveside.
If the service is held at a church, the arrangements may vary. The coffin may be taken from the church to the cemetery for burial, or to the crematorium for cremation, depending on the family’s wishes and the arrangements that have been made.
Every funeral is different, and your funeral director will explain what will happen on the day so that you and your family know what to expect.
Every Funeral is Different
There is no set way to hold a funeral. Some families choose a traditional service, while others prefer something more informal or personal. The length of the funeral can also depend on the choices made by the family.
If you’re arranging a funeral and aren’t sure what to expect, your funeral director can talk you through each stage and help you understand the options available.
At Jackson Family Funeral Directors, we’re here to support families throughout the funeral arrangements, answering questions and helping you plan a service that feels right for you and your loved one.
